What happens when a family lake home’s large oak tree is struck by lightning? In the case of Louis on the Lake, when lightning struck, this oak tree blew up, causing shrapnel like particles of bark and tree to blast through the home’s windows, leaving destruction and a mess in its path. The main floor of the home was left destroyed. The family was devastated (fortunately, they were not home at the time, and no one was injured).
The main floor would need to be gutted and remodeled; all furniture and appliances had to go. There was no question that Colby Construction was the team for the remodel, and plans were drawn up.
Keeping the home intact and making the most of the space was the goal. The 1970’s home did not offer great views of the lake and did not have an open concept. When the opportunity for this remodel took place, it did become a “sudden stroke of fortune,” and the family had the chance to create a complete new feel to their home.
Utilizing the space, the former living room was made into a beautiful large dining room. The family loves to entertain, and, at holidays, they gather family and friends together. The fireplace and hearth of the room was refreshed with a beautiful slab of granite that dictated the look and feel of the space. A tucked in wet bar was added to the space as well. The former three-season room was made into a media room and a gourmet kitchen with an open concept sitting room has become the heart of the family home. The kitchen included custom ideas, including a baking center and a large center island painted in red, the homeowner’s favorite color.
One feature that was the dream of the owners was to have a large walk-in pantry off of the kitchen. This carefully thought-out space includes a wall that can be used as a dry erase board and another wall that can be used for magnets. The functional space includes a charging center and a spot for the printer and phone as well.
The remodel has given a fresh, updated space to a family without changing the integrity of the home. This dwelling is now their dream home and is a quality, custom space. The family was able to stay in the home throughout the remodel and was completed in a time that worked with their busy lives.
Colby Construction helped turn the family’s devastation into a dream home. Today we look at some before and after pictures of the home, along with a few pictures of what was left in the tree’s wake.
