Memorial Day commemorates all men and women who have died in U.S. military service. Memorial Day began a few years after the Civil War, in 1868. An organization of Union veterans established the holiday, then known as Decoration Day, as a time to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. From then until the present day, the solemn holiday has been formally observed at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

Memorial Day weekend is important for this observation, remembering the brave men and women who gave their lives while serving the country. There are parades, ceremonies, and remembrance combined with more light-hearted and fun activities for the entire family. This date also welcomes the summer season, backyard barbecues, and of course, lake time in southeastern Wisconsin.

Getting your custom home ready for the holiday weekend and the beginning of summer can be overwhelming. Try to keep it as simple as possible and remember that time with friends and family is what’s most important.

Memorial Day Weekend in Your Custom Home

Here’s a simple checklist to get ready for Memorial Day weekend in your custom home – and for the summer ahead.

Have the AC checked: During the hottest days of summer, many families find themselves sweating it out due to a broken air conditioning system. Be proactive so you can avoid waiting for hours or days because the HVAC repair person is booked solid. Have your air conditioning system checked before or around Memorial Day each year.

Clean patio and porch areas: Summer means outdoor living time. Be sure your outdoor furniture is out and cleaned off, along with the grill. Add decorative pillows to your outdoor seating, making it comfortable for family and friends who stop by for a visit. Be sure to put up umbrellas for seating out of the direct sun.

Hang your flag: A beautiful way to honor the weekend and the beginning of the summer is by raising your American flag, whether it be on your pier or a post or pole on your home.

Plant your pots: If you don’t have time to create your own flower pots, visit your local nursery or hardware store, where you can select from beautiful options that are already potted and ready for display.

Get the games ready: Summer and holiday weekends mean outdoor games. Set up the croquet, the cornhole boards, and the ring toss. Set up a badminton net and be ready for some fun, competitive action.

If you plan to travel over the weekend or summer, ensure security while you’re away: When you leave for vacation, the last thing you should have to worry about is the security of your home. Install a home security system, and put a timer on your lights so they go on and off at normal hours. You can also alert your local police department that you’ll be gone, and ask them to drive by your house once in a while to make sure everything is okay.
