The owners of Clare Lane knew for many years they wanted to live on a lake. In fact, they looked for the perfect home on and off for 15 years. They were thrilled when the spot they knew was the perfect place to call home on a beautiful, clean lake country lake became available. Knowing the home, which was old and needed a lot of repair, would sell quickly because of the lot and views alone, they moved forward immediately and purchased it.
Once the sale was complete, they needed to decide whether to renovate the property entirely or tear it down and build a custom home. They spoke with three reputable custom home builders, but Pete Feichtmeier, the owner of Colby Construction, was the only one who took the time to come and actually look at the property. Pete encouraged them to tear down and build the custom home they wished for. They knew they would be limiting themselves and not getting what they truly wanted by renovating, so they decided to tear down and build.
Clare Lane: Building a Custom Home
Their research began, and they did their homework before selecting the builder to make their dream a reality. All of the builders they were looking at were quality home builders. Ultimately, they spoke to many clients of the different builders, and the unanimous statement they heard from Colby Construction’s customers was that they would absolutely build with them again.
“Pete was a straight shooter and really listened to us,” the homeowner shared.
The decision was made, and Colby Construction was hired to build their custom home on their new lot with the views they had dreamed of when seeking lake property. Pete recommended Bryan Tom, owner of Architectural Development Services (ADS), and again, the homeowners interviewed three firms. They really felt like they clicked with Bryan, so ADS was brought on to the project.
From the beginning of the design process, Pete attended all the meetings, working through the floor plans as a team. Pete and Bryan listened to precisely what the couple wanted, everything from the home’s look, style, and feel. The couple had lived in New England and wanted to build a house with a Cape Cod/Nantucket Coastal vibe, and ADS and Colby Construction worked together to create the perfect home for them.
Early in the planning stages, the couple was clear about the home’s most important aspect.
The homeowner shared, “We told the team our number one priority was the views, our second priority was the views, and our third priority was more views!” And they made that happen.
Jim Angle was the project manager for the new build, and they could not have been more thrilled with him. “He was amazing. I even told Pete, ‘this guy is worth his weight in gold!’”
The owner shared that throughout the building process, they knew Colby would deal with any issues that would come up. They felt like they were genuinely being listened to and creating exactly the home they wanted. They were particular about what they wanted in their new home and knew it would be the house they would have for years to come. The process took 14 months, and the Colby team worked hard to make that timeframe happen.
They still love the layout after living in their dream home for a few years. The house was built to allow them to live on the main floor. The master bedroom suite, kitchen, laundry room, home office, and family room are all right there, making it a home that will be accessible to aging at home. The second floor features beautiful guest suites and a sitting loft. The lower level has an open-concept family room, a game room, and a workout/exercise room.
The couple loves to cook together, so creating an exceptional kitchen was very important to them. They put a lot of time, thought, and care into making it one of their favorite rooms in the house.
